An Asset Category groups Models into types of assets — for example "Notebook", "Monitor", "Smartphone" or "Server". The Category is also where you define which Custom Fields are available for assets of that type.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
Overview
Every Model belongs to exactly one Category. Every Hardware Asset inherits its Category indirectly through its Model.
Core Fields
- Name
- Description
- Icon and Content Type – an optional image (up to 5 MB) used to visually represent the Category/its Models in listings.
Custom Field Definitions
A Category carries a list of Configuration Item Column Definitions. Each entry links the Category to one Column Definition (a Custom Field) that should be available for Configuration Items of that Category.
This is how you make different asset types show different Custom Fields: define the Category once, attach the Column Definitions you need, and every Model/Hardware Asset in that Category automatically gets those fields on its Configuration Item.
Usage in Models and Configuration Items
When a new Hardware Asset's Configuration Item is auto-created, au2mator looks at the Model's Category and pre-fills exactly the Custom Fields that are defined there.
